I've lived in Italy for ten years and travel a lot on the weekends staying in various hotels. I almost always carry my camera with me when out of the room, but have never had any problems with anything in my bags left in the room. When I went three years ago, I kept my camera with me at all times. However, another in my group used a small lock box she had brought with her for those few times she didn't want to bring it.
