Hotel rooms & two double beds?

Does anyone know why most hotels have quite a few rooms that have two double beds?

I mean it sort of makes sense if you are traveling with a family - kids in one bed parents in another...but for many business travelers they are alone or with their spouse - why do you need two beds. It seems like a waste of space and expense for hotel chains to offer so many of these types of rooms. Why not offer double, queen or king with only a few double rooms? Maybe it's changing but for a while it seemed that the 2 beds were the norm.

The only thing I could think of is from puritan laws - All couples staying overnight in a hotel must have a room with double beds that are at least two feet apart.

Please help - for some reason I'm fixated on this stupid question.Hotel rooms %26amp; two double beds?
They can make more money with two beds rather than one ... I know hotels where the double beds are actually two singles box springs and one double mattress ...
