Can you rent out a hotel room on the spot?

My boyfriend is here from England and he's coming to stay with me and my family, but he's coming a day early cause we want to spend a night in the hotel together. i'm 18 and he's 21 but i've never done the hotel thing before. He's not getting here until about 8, then we were just going to go to one and he was gonna try to get a room on the spot. Can you do that? or is it mandatory to make a reservation? Can you rent out a hotel room on the spot?
It's better to reserve a hotel room in advance in a desired hotel to avoid non-availability of rooms. If you are booking in your name you need to find hotels that allow 18 year old's as some hotels do.Can you rent out a hotel room on the spot?
You can rent a room any time, the question is would one be available. You could just walk in and try to get one, but if the hotel is full you would have to move to another one. Also if you just walk in the hotel could charge you a higher price and you have little option. Any time you know you need a room, you should make a reservation. This way, you're assured you will have a room, and you can also compare prices before you decide. You have more leeway for price negotiation if you reserve in advance.
