Bibles in hotel rooms...?

The Gideons (organization that puts Bibles in hotel rooms) spoke at my church yesterday. It made me think - have you ever been affected by a hotel Bible? In other words, were you ever feeling lost or lonely, found the Bible and felt better? Or any other thoughts on Bibles in hotel rooms?Bibles in hotel rooms...?
It's a wonderful thing. At the church I used to attend, there was a man, previously a staunch athiest, who was a senior financial worker, and was very successful in the workplace, but not so successful at the rest of life. He had gone to an expensive hotel with the view of squandering his money before taking his life. However, when he read the message of hope of Christ in the Gideon's bible, he said something something touched him and he started to cry. He prayed to God for the first time in his life, and last I heard, he hasn't looked back. Hotels can be such lonely places when you're there alone - people may be going through all sorts of crises, marital problems, employment etc. it's the perfect place to find comfort in a God who cares about you. So many people seem so offended by it, but it's not their money being invested into it and they can choose to ignore it. Some people are at a point in life where they need it. I'm grateful these bibles are there, even if it were just for the one man whose life was saved and how he has gone on to enrich my life and the lives of those around him. I'm sure there are other people who have benefited directly and indirectly.Bibles in hotel rooms...?

One hotel, had a parakeet that quoted Scripture! The owner's wife--a J.W.-- had bought it at 5 wks old, %26amp; she taught it to say: ‘Come, you people, praise Jehovah.’; ‘Preach the Word! Preach the Word!’; %26amp;, ‘First John 4:8, God is love. Look it up! Look it up!' One lady guest did look it up...

Could I leave a donation and take it with me when I leave?’ The J.W. replied: ‘No. Come by my home later and I’ll give you one.’ She did, %26amp; left w/ several B-Study aids

I have personally found the Bible very comforting. Once I could not sleep at all because of the great heartache I felt from a breakup. So, I turned on the light, opened my Bible to Psalm 4:8. After reading that passage, I turned off the light and literally fell asleep in seconds.

While I have not been affected because of the Bible in the hotel room, God's Word has been a comfort to me many times in my life. I take my own personal Bible with me everywhere I go, so I have never accidentally come across one in the hotel room and started reading it.

I have, on occasion, read one in the doctor's office while waiting, when I've left my Bible in the car.
I was affected by a Bible in my hotel. I was in a Marriott so they had the book of Mormon. I decided I couldn't read the whole book during my stay so I took it home with me (figuring they wouldn't mind).

I read almost the whole book!!! It was dreadful... really the worst religious book I ever read.

How did it affect me... well - reading it helped me fall to sleep, and I confirmed my shock that anyone could believe that stuff!
I always carry my own Bible with me, but I think this practice of putting them in the hotel rooms is marvelous. There are people who go in to those places and they are very down and may be suicidal or on the verge of disaster and they pick up the Bible and it gives them the needed hope, and many are saved this way. Very good!
I've never been concerned by Bibles in hotel rooms (although the first answerer makes a good point) as long as there is plenty of storage space - I have thrown the gideon's bible in the rubbish bin in the past when it was taking space in the only functional drawer in the room.
Dear G,

I traveled quite extensively. NOT all hotels have Bibles. In areas like Utah where there is a Strong Mormon influence there are their Book of Mormon and The Bible.

I am already a Christian. One does not need examples about what God's Word does or does not do, because He says...

(Hebrews 4:12-13) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow, as it judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart.

(Heb 4:13) No creature can hide from him, but all are naked and helpless before the eyes of the one to whom we must give a word of explanation.

AND...

(Jeremiah 23:29) Is not My Word like a fire? says Jehovah; and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Thanks for Asking! RR
I have forgotten my bible and been able to use the Gideon bible for my daily reading before. I think its a good thing to have there, if people aren't interested in it that's fine, just leave them for those who may need them. I know that they have helped save many people.
Many many many hotels in America don't offer bibles in their rooms anymore.

I can't remember the last time I saw one.

They finally realized that it might be slightly insulting to their non-Christian patrons.
I enjoy seeing a Bible in a hotel room, and have at least once or twice picked it up and read from Psalms or something. But I don't stay in hotels often as I can't afford much traveling.
I was in dire need of rolling papers and I chanced upon a Gideon's New Testement: Evidence of a kind and loving God, or not.
I've been affected by the Holy Bible many times! When I forget mine at home while traveling, it's always nice to know that there's one in the hotel room.
It makes a reasonable scrap pad, in a pinch

Though I did read some of the Mahabharata when I was in an Indian hotel.
No I haven't had any profound epiphanies from bibles in hotel rooms.
Its nice to have a bible in hotel rooms in case I run out of rolling paper, worked out nicely!
It never made any difference to me whether one left a work of fiction in my hotel room.
Only by the fact of the lies it has and the people who are totally brainwashed by it.
people who don't like bibles or don't like hearing about God are prideful at heart and are full of demons
Yes, whenever I see them, I feel sorry for our society which is so infected with the disease of religion.
If no cigarette papers are at hand it comes in handy. For some reason the OT burns alot more evenly than the NT. The NT is always canoe-ing.
An environmental disaster.
Sure.

The book makes me laugh, and laughter always makes me feel better.
Nope, I usually take it and leave it in the fiction section of the nearest bookstore.
They're great.

I have a New Testament with psalms %26amp; Proverbs which had been published by the Gideons.
I usually get the top floor so I can throw it off the balcony.
I wanted to read it, because I was bored and forgot my bible... but I only read the KJV. So I sat there being bored while my husband slept.
I only use it when my hotel room runs out of toilet paper.
I hide the Bible if it's there. I don't want to see it, or have other people see it.
I take them bibles home and use them in my outhouse.
When I'm out of toilet paper, yes.
It is a good thing.
No, I haven't. I find them an annoying impediment to storing my belongings.

If they're allowed to put Bibles in hotel rooms, then we should have EVERY book in hotel rooms.

Or, more sensibly, none at all. I happen to enjoy the book Story of O, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start dropping it in public places. Mothers would sue the hell out of me.

The Bible is gory, perverted, and extremist. Why is it any different?
