We rented a hotel room in California and got slammed with a BED TAX. What is that for?

It was $18 per night ';Bed Tax'; on top of the room rate of $179.95

How can this be?We rented a hotel room in California and got slammed with a BED TAX. What is that for?
How can it be? It's pretty standard. I've encountered the same thing in many places. We rented a hotel room in California and got slammed with a BED TAX. What is that for?
I visited California last month and had a great time. I can't remember which hotel I stated at, but it wasn't worth recommending. I found a list of hotels in California here: http://www.hotelroomfinder.org/Californi鈥?/a> I'm sure you can find a hotel to call and help get you situated.

It's a fee imposed by local governments, basically to make people pay who stay in a place for a night or longer, but don't live there. It is supposed to make visitors pay for local expenses, because they benefit from local infrastructure as well.
